Mazda Motor Corporation has appointed South African native Craig Roberts as new Managing Director of Mazda Southern Africa. Currently Head of Sales and an Executive for Mazda SA, Mr. Roberts has a long standing career and widespread experience within the automotive sector. He will assume the Managing Director position 1st April 2017.
Craig will be taking over from David Hughes who came from Australia in 2013 with a clear mandate; set-up Mazda Southern Africa (Pty) Ltd as a stand-alone entity and establish a new dealer footprint. Within a year of his arrival, a new Midrand based MSA head office was built and a full sales and service dealer network of 52 was identified to cover South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland. Continuing the rollout of Mazda’s SKYACTIV Technology; Mazda has introduced SKYACTIV-VEHICLE DYNAMICS. This is a series of new-generation vehicle motion control technologies that provide integrated control of the engine, transmission, chassis and body to enhance the vehicle’s Jinba-Ittai; a sense of connectedness between car and driver that distinguishes Mazda vehicles.
The G-Vectoring Control (GVC) is the first innovation from this series and it will now be introduced in the 2017 model year Mazda CX-3. It engages by finely controlling engine torque that is based on the steering and acceleration of the driver, resulting in improved handling for the driver and ride quality for the passengers around corners. The fully redesigned model, which refines every element of Mazda’s design and technology to offer new dimensions of driving pleasure, will be launched in Japan in February and is expected to launch in Southern Africa mid-2017.

Mazda has retained the vehicle sales momentum built over the preceding months with a NAAMSA reported sales total of 949 units at the end of July 2016. It was also a record month for the volume selling Mazda CX-5 which sold 387 units in a single month. The CX-5 also achieved the highest dealer sales in the medium SUV segment with 381 dealer sales recorded for July 2016.
Mazda has grown January to July sales volumes by 64% with 2016 Year to Date sales totaling 7 261 units versus 4 694 units sold during the same period in 2015. This sales growth comes at a time where the South African vehicle market is down by 17%, the passenger car segment down by 20% and the total vehicle market down by 11% Year on Year compared to July 2015.

The all-new Mazda MX-5 that recently launched in South Africa has been named 2015-2016 Car of the Year by the Japan Automotive Hall of Fame (JAHFA). An award ceremony was held at Mazda’s Tokyo office. The MX-5 Roadster is the third Mazda to win the award following the Mazda RX-8 which took the honour in 2003.
JAHFA’s judges praised the all-new MX-5 for its sophisticated open-top sports car design and advanced SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY. They also noted the outstanding driving performance and fuel efficiency the model exhibits thanks to its lightweight yet highly rigid body.
